« GERMAN POP MUSIC »

Introduction

Many German-speaking musicians and composers, such as Bach, Beethoven and Mozart, bequeathed the civilization their marvellous masterpieces of classical music. Along the development from formal court music, an informal popular music has been enjoyed by the common people in German-speaking regions. However, few German pop musicians have made their influence noticeable in the modern history. On the other hand, their music has been strongly influenced by the English-speaking cultures from the 1920s to now, except in the period of Nazi Germany. The following note presents the few musicians who make to the international scene.

Kraftwerk

This German band was formed by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider in 1969 and gained popularity in the early 1970s. Their distinct style employs modern instrumentation, such as synthesizers and other electronic devices. After Schneider's departure in 2008, the remaining members still perform as of 2016. In January 2014, the Recording Academy honored the band with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

2raumWohnung

In this 21st Century, a pop music group 2raumwohnun (Zwei Raum Wohnung) has recently arrived in the scene of international music. This new a new pop music consists of Inga Humpe and Tommi Eckart. For years, they had worked behind the scene, composing and making music for others. Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, they moved to the eastern part of Berlin. In 2000, they teamed up to compose a small piece for a cigarette brand Cabinet. Because of the public attention on the 40-second advertisement music, they finished the song and released it as a single "Wir trafen uns im Garten". Not wanting to use their own names, they adopted an artistic name 2raumwohnung - an East German abbreviation for a two-room apartment.

Their songs are generally relaxing with a hint of electronic and mechanical tones. With a mix of soft electronic sounds and acoustic instruments, Inga as the main vocal delivers a very upbeat and tantalizing music. Their music videos also portray the gentle and happy mosaic of a folksy and diverse populace in a new Germany.

Since then the group has become famous in Germany. Their third album "Es wird morgen" ranked two in German LP chart in 2004. Their latest album "Lasso" was released in 2009.

The lyrics of 36 Grad in German and the English translation

Guck' mal, 'was die Jungs da hinten tun

Ich will eure Zimmer seh'n.
Wir liegen vor der Minibar,
Komm', laß uns Baden geh'n.

36 Grad - Und es wird noch heißer,
Mach' den Beat nie wieder leiser.
36 Grad - Kein Ventilator,
36 Graaaaaad, aaaaaah
36 Graaaaaad, aaaaaah

Guck' 'mal, 'was die wieder da hinten tun,
Ich weiß nicht, 'was das soll,
Aber ich find's gut.
Alle Jungs singen und tanzen hier,
Kommt Girls, da sind wir.

Schuhe aus,
Bikini an.

36 Graaaaaad, aaaaaah
36 Graaaaaad, aaaaaah

Hier Jungs, da Girls,
Weiter, weiter, weiter,
Gebt alles und mehr als ihr könnt.
Keiner weiß, 'was gleich passiert,

Weiter, weiter, weiter, weiter, ..., weiter.
Keiner weiß, 'was gleich passiert,

Look, what the guys are doing behind there!
And tell them, "I want that too."
For time and time again the guys are doing it,
Then I realize what I need.

I'll give you a gift.
Open it please.
Order me a drink.
I'll come up to you,
Or you come down to me.
I want to see your room.
We're lying in front of the mini-bar
Come! Let's have a bath.

36 degrees - And it's still getting hotter.
Turn the beat down no more.
36 degrees - no fan!
The life for me is not hard at all
36 degrees .........
36 degrees .........

Look, what they are doing behind there!
I don't know what it's all about.
But I like it.
All the guys are singing and dancing here
Come, girls. Here we are!

Shoes off!
Bikin on!
We're going out.
It starts to rain.
We shall dance and know already the sun will again appear,
And then the rainbow.
Wow, this is beautiful, ahh!

36 degrees - And it's still getting hotter.
Turn the beat down no more.
36 degrees - no fan!
The life for me is not hard at all.
36 degrees...........
36 degrees...........

Here guys, there girls.
Go, go, go
Give all and more you can.
Nobody knows what to happen soon.
But everyone knows here that the air burns.
Haaaaaah haaah haaah
Haaaaaah haaah haaah
Haaaaaah haaah haaah
Haaaaaah haaah haaah

36 degrees - And it's still getting hotter
Turn the beat down no more.
36 degrees - no fan!
The life for me is not hard at all, aaaaah

Give all and more you can.
Here guys, there girls.
Go, go, go, go, ..... go.
Nobody knows what happens soon.
But everyone knows here that the air burns.

36 degrees...
The life for me is not hard at all.
